【摘要】:Anumberoflaboratoryproceduresareusedtoevaluatetheeffectivenessoffire-retardantandfire-resistanttreatmentsandcoatings.Ingeneral,thesemethodsmeasurethethreestagesoffiredevelopment:(1)ignition;(2)flamespread(rateofgrowthofthefire);and(3)conflagrationextent.Whileallthreeareofextremeimportance,flamespreadhasbeenrecognizedasthemainfactorassociatedwithtestingfire-retardantcoatings.FlamespreadratingsbaseduponTestMethodE84haveacquiredcommonacceptancebyregulatoryagencies,butsuchlarge-scaletestsareseldompracticalduringthedevelopmentormodificationofafire-retardantcoating.Thistestmethodprovidestherelativeflamespreadofexperimentalcoatingsusingsmalltestspecimens.Bycalibratingthe2-foottunnelwithTestMethodE84-ratedfire-retardantpaint,resultsobtainedbythistestmethodshouldbeindicativeofthoseobtainedwithalargespecimenintheTestMethodE84tunnel.1.1Thistestmethoddeterminestheprotectionacoatingaffordsitssubstrate,andthecomparativeburningcharacteristicsofcoatingsbyevaluatingtheflamespreadoverthesurfacewhenignitedundercontrolledconditionsinasmalltunnel.Thisestablishesabasisforcomparingsurface-burningcharacteristicsofdifferentcoatingswithoutspecificconsiderationofalltheend-useparametersthatmightaffectsurface-burningcharacteristicsunderactualfireconditions.1.2Inadditiontotheexperimentalflamespreadrate,theweightofpanelconsumed,timeofafterflamingandafterglow,chardimensionsandindex,andheightofintumescencemaybemeasuredinthistest.However,arelationshipshouldnotbepresumedamongthesemeasurements.1.3Thisstandardshouldbeusedtomeasureanddescribethepropertiesofmaterials,products,orassembliesinresponsetoheatandflameundercontrolledlaboratoryconditions,andshouldnotbeusedtodescribeorappraisethefirehazardorfireriskofmaterials,products,orassembliesunderactualfireconditions.However,resultsofthistestmaybeusedaselementsofafireriskassessmentwhichtakesintoaccountallofthefactorswhicharepertinenttoanassessmentofthefirehazardofaparticularenduse.1.4ThevaluesstatedinSIunitsaretoberegardedasthestandard.Thevaluesgiveninparenthesesareforinformationonly.Thisstandarddoesnotpurporttoaddressallofthesafetyconcerns,ifany,associatedwithitsuse.Itistheresponsibilityoftheuserofthisstandardtoestablishappropriatesafetyandhealthpracticesanddeterminetheapplicabilityofregulatorylimitationspriortouse.
